On the advice of Shigetaka Shiga, the work was compiled into about 1,000 pages, with an introduction from Shiga. Following publication, The Geography of Human Life received favorable reviews in numerous periodicals, newspapers and magazines. The book was reprinted twice during 1903. The work was considered required reading for students preparing to take the Ministry of Education's qualifying examination for geography teachers.
